BaZi: Four Pillars Chart Structure and Learning Guide

Learn how BaZi turns a birth year, month, day, and hour into four stem-branch pillars, which inputs and boundary rules matter, and how to study a chart in order.

Overview

BaZi, also called the Four Pillars of Destiny, is a traditional Chinese system that represents the birth year, month, day, and hour as four stem-branch pairs. The four Heavenly Stems and four Earthly Branches form the “eight characters.” This Wiki owns the entity overview and learning path; chart calculation and AI interpretation belong to their dedicated tools.

BaZi and the Four Pillars in one chart

The Year, Month, Day, and Hour Pillars each contain one Heavenly Stem above one Earthly Branch. The Day Stem, often called the Day Master, supplies the reference point for the Ten Gods, while the Month Branch supplies important seasonal context. Neither one represents a whole person by itself.

Calendar choice, historical time zone, daylight-saving rules, solar-term boundaries, day rollover, hour boundaries, and any true-solar-time policy can change a chart. If the birth time is unknown, a responsible calculator shows the confirmed pillars and the unresolved Hour Pillar instead of inventing it.

  • Year Pillar: year stem + year branch | Month Pillar: month stem + month branch
  • Day Pillar: day stem + day branch | Hour Pillar: hour stem + hour branch
  • Verify the eight characters before deriving hidden stems, Ten Gods, strength, patterns, or timing layers.

Choose calculation, learning, or interpretation

Use the free BaZi chart tool when you want to calculate your own Four Pillars from complete birth inputs. Use the foundations path when you want definitions and reproducible rules. After a chart is verified, move through Month Command, hidden stems, Ten Gods, stem-branch relations, structures, and luck cycles before considering an interpretation.

A reproducible traditional chart does not establish scientific validity or prove personality, health, marriage, wealth, or future events. AI explanations must retain the input record, rule version, chart evidence, uncertainty, and counterevidence.

  • Calculate: generate and verify the Four Pillars.
  • Learn: understand the chart fields and boundary rules.
  • Interpret conditionally: compare the whole chart with real-world evidence.

A reliable learning order

Learn in the same order a chart is built and judged: calculation, Four Pillars, hidden stems and roots, Month Command and strength, useful gods, Ten God combinations, relation conditions, timing, and life applications.

  • Calculation: calendar rules, Four Pillars, time zone, and solar time
  • Structure: hidden stems, roots, Month Command, and strength
  • Interpretation: useful gods, Ten God combinations, patterns, and relation conditions
  • Timing and application: Luck Pillars, annual cycles, relationships, career, and wealth

What AstralNex expands first

Rare patterns remain available as references, but they do not lead the curriculum. A term becomes an editorial page only after its rule and localized review are complete.

  • State the definition, required conditions, exclusions, and exceptions.
  • Explain the role in the whole chart rather than labeling one symbol in isolation.
  • Cover strength, weakness, favorable, unfavorable, and timing context when relevant.
  • Include sources, common errors, related definitions, Insights, and applicable tools.

Sources and editorial basis

Bazi reading

Follow the Four Pillars, Month Command, hidden stems and Ten Gods before reading strengths or life themes. Keep natal structure separate from Da Yun and annual triggers. The linked method records the day-boundary and True Solar Time choices used by the calculator.

Read the input and settings first, the computed chart second, and the explanation third. Keep a traditional interpretation separate from an observed fact about the person; a precise birth calculation does not make every sentence about their life true.

A traditional source explains where a rule comes from. A calculation check tests the stated case. A generated report shows the writing for its recorded input, language and date. None of these alone proves future outcomes, independent expert endorsement or reader satisfaction. Check the sample page for its origin, completeness and any unavailable parts.
